Root Pruning Of Potted Plants

Root pruning is essential to healthy potted plants and should be done as needed. There are a few signs that a plant needs to be root pruned; if there are exposed roots, the plant is unable to take up water or the plant no longer fits into the pot. The first step it to remove the plant from the pot. This can be done by turning the pot upside down and gently tap the plant out or using a knife to cut around the edges loosening the roots from the pot. In extreme situations breaking the pot is necessary.

Once the pant is out of the pot you can take a dull kitchen knife and cut off the bottom and sides of the roots. If the roots are very root-bound you may need to tease the roots apart. Take off enough roots that new soil can be added to the edges and sides. Place some soil at the bottom of the pot, place the plant back in and fill soil around the edges of the plant. Make sure you do not place the plant further down in the soil than it was before. After the plant has been successfully re-potted make sure to water it and keep it protected from extreme temperature or sun for a few days.
